Terms of Use

SpellOwl is a spelling practice service for families: a parent photographs the spelling list from school, and the app builds a short daily audio practice from it. SpellOwl is a practice aid; it does not replace school instruction and does not guarantee any particular test result.

• First-time subscribers get a 7-day free trial with all features included: the store (Apple or Google) checks that your store account has not used one before. No payment is taken during the trial.
• After the trial, SpellOwl requires a subscription: $4.99 per month or $39.99 per year (US prices; local prices may vary with taxes and the store you buy through).
• Subscriptions renew automatically at the end of each period, through the App Store (Apple), through Google Play, or through Stripe if you subscribed on the website, until you cancel.
• You can cancel anytime: in your App Store subscription settings for App Store purchases, in Google Play (Payments and subscriptions, then Subscriptions) for Google Play purchases, or from your parent account for Stripe subscriptions. Cancellation takes effect at the end of the paid period, which you keep in full.
• Purchases made through the App Store are also governed by Apple's terms, and refunds for those purchases are handled by Apple.
• Purchases made through Google Play are also governed by the Google Play Terms of Service, and refunds for those purchases are handled by Google Play.

A SpellOwl account is for your own household: the parent who owns the account and the children whose profiles that parent creates. It is for personal, non-commercial use. Accounts may not be shared outside the household, resold, or used to provide a service to others (for example, a classroom service).

The spelling lists you photograph or type in are yours and stay yours. You give SpellOwl permission to process them (extract the words, generate practice sentences and audio) solely to provide the service to your family. You are responsible for only scanning material you are allowed to use, such as the word list your child's teacher sends home. Deleting your account deletes your content.

You agree not to misuse the service: no attempts to break or probe its security, no automated scraping, no use of the AI-powered features to generate content unrelated to spelling practice, and no use that violates the law.

SpellOwl is provided "as is". To the maximum extent permitted by law, we are not liable for indirect or consequential damages, and our total liability for any claim related to the service is limited to the amount you paid for SpellOwl in the 12 months before the claim. Nothing in these terms limits liability that cannot be limited by law.

We may update the service and these terms as SpellOwl evolves. If a change to these terms is significant, we will let you know by email or in the app before it takes effect. Continuing to use SpellOwl after a change means you accept the updated terms.

SpellOwl is published by Thomas Fontaine, a sole trader registered in France. These terms are governed by French law, and any dispute about them that cannot be settled amicably will be brought before the competent French courts.

If you use SpellOwl as a consumer, you keep the protection of any mandatory consumer law of the country where you live, and you may also bring a claim before the courts of that country. Nothing in these terms limits those rights.

Purchases made through the App Store are a contract between you and Apple, under Apple's own terms: billing, cancellation and refunds for those purchases are handled by Apple, not by us.

Purchases made through Google Play are processed by Google under the Google Play Terms of Service: billing, cancellation and refunds for those purchases are handled by Google Play, not by us.
